Phyllidia cf ocellata Cuvier, 1804
~30mm

This phyllidiid was found and photographed by Stan Jazwinski on the steep seaward dropoff at Kwajalein Atoll. Although Phyllidia ocellata is considered a highly variable species, as seen on page 279 in Gosliner et al (2015), it is so much different from the three other Kwajalein specimens we have identified as that species that we feel the need to keep it separate for now. We think DNA work will be needed to sort out the different forms of this group.

One more of this same variety was found on the steep seaward slope of the seaward reef by Jay Lord.
