Spondylus anacanthus Mawe, 1823
39.15mm

These medium large clams are mostly seen cemented to the steep seaward reef, often in caves and overhangs at depths exceeding 45m. Occasionally, specimens that appeared to be the same species were under large rocks at the top of the slope in as little as 6m. Shells are nearly invariably coated with red sponge. Specimen seen alive on the reef, particulaly those in deep caves, are often much larger than our measured size, probably reaching at least 100mm.
