Small, very spiny specimens of this species are commonly seen cemented to the undersurfaces of rocks on lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reefs. Although we have seen these figured as S. echinatus, they do not match the figures of that species linked to in Molluscabase.
This would appear to be an older, larger specimen that has lost most of its spines, but it could be something different.
