Spondylus varius Sowerby, 1827
200+mm

The largest of the Spondylids found at Kwajalein, this species is usually spotted cemented to rocky slopes on lagoon pinnacle reefs or to lagoon bottom shipwrecks, although they can occasionally be seen on lagoon or seaward reefs as well. They tend to clam up when approached, but if you hold still and wait, they will usually open up again and allow a few photos to be taken.

On the shipwreck at Eller Island, Kwajalein Atoll.

This one was attached to an old sunken buoy on the pinnacle now marked with K10 buoy.

With soft corals growing on the shell.
