Conus cf consors Sowerby, 1833
Singed cone?
These
particular photos were identified on iNaturalist as Conus
consors, although I have some reservations about the ID. As
noted by Monnier
et al (2022), C. consors is very similar to members of the Conus
magus group of species, including Conus
kwajaleinensis, a species common in the Marshalls. Under that periostracum,
these could easily resemble some of the type specimens of C. (Pionoconus)
kwajaleinensis, such as the paratype figured here.
For now we will leave it at C. cf consors, since it would
probably require a close examination of the cleaned shell to be certain of the
species. This one was found at Majuro Atoll by Raphaël Forns.
