Conus coronatus Gmelin, 1791
Coronated cone,
27mm
Conus
coronatus is abundant on intertidal interisland reefs and on some
large flat-topped lagoon pinnacles in the Marshalls.
They are usually found in or on sand in pockets in the reef. A similar species,
Conus aristophanes, is reported to be very similar in shell morphology
to C. coronatus and can be difficult to tell apart. It is possible
that both species occur in the Marshalls.
This was a very small specimen observed with a number of others at night in
a shallow reef quarry at Kwajalein.
A specimen from the lagoon side of Ennubuj Island on the Kwajalein Atoll west
reef.
