Conus planorbis Born, 1778
Planorbis cone,
75mm
Conus
planorbis is a
common, variable species found from the intertidal down to at least 16m on both
lagoon and seaward reefs. It can be found under rocks or exposed in rocky or
rubbly areas. It has long been known as Conus vitulinus, and I'm not sure if
the exact ID has yet satisfactorily been worked out.
Like many cones, Conus planorbis
lays its eggs capsules attached to the undersurfaces of rocks.
The one below has some characteristics
of a different species, Conus circumactis, but we think ours is a variation
of C. planorbis.
The color of this one resembles
some forms of Conus magus.
