Lyncina vitellus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Deer cowry, 80mm

Lyncina vitellus is a widespread common Indo-Pacific species that is rather rare in Hawaii. The only specimens we saw were one at a shallow reef near Makua and several along the Magic Island side of the channel leading into Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, hidden back in ledges along the steep, dredged channel walls at depths of 2 to 5m. Specimens were all quite large, much larger than the majority of the same species from the Marshall Islands.
