Mauritia mauritiana (Linnaeus, 1758)

Mauritia mauritiana is common in Hawaii in shallow water along rough,
wave swept coasts. They tend to live in pockets in the reef or on lava flows
and in the turbulent water strongly adhere to the substrate with the strong
foot. An empty 99.1mm specimen is
shown below. They can grow considerably larger.
We have also seen Mauritia
mauritiana in the Marshall
Islands.
