Oxymeris
maculata (Linnaeus, 1758)
227.0mm
Oxymeris
maculata is the largest Terebrid found at Kwajalein and is commonly
found in a variety of lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reef sandy areas. It forms
large sand trails as it pulls its large shell through the sand.
It is commonly called a "Marlin Spike" due to its similarity in shape
to an old time nautical tool used for splicing ropes.
A sand trail in a seaward reef
sand patch. The shell is under the mound at the left end of the trail.
