Lots of the T. gigas we see died a long time ago. This large one just has the upper edges of the valves visible above the sand and rubble. Along the shallow east reef in the southern lagoon, places like Shell Island (Ebwaj) and North Loi, there are many old dead T. gigas valves and fragments scattered about. There are no live ones there nowadays; it is a bit too close to inhabited islands.
