Giant clam - Tridacna gigas

We watched this one for quite a few years at a favorite dive site we could usually get to only once or twice a year. It was a large clam, way down in a hole with a large table coral shading it on one side and a tangled mess of staghorn Acropora growing up around the other three sides--and often right over the clam itself. Whenever we visited, we'd have to clean broken stalks of coral from the top and inside the clam, and would usually weed the staghorn back a ways to give the clam room to breathe. Alas, in April 2011 we found the clam had lost the battle. On our previous visit, in July 2010, it had still been going strong.
