We are pretty sure this one died of natural causes. It was well down in a hole surrounded by growing coral. It seems every time we visited this isolated reef, we had to clear off chunks of coral that had fallen on top of the clam, and usually tried to weed back the fast-growing staghorn Acropora to give the clam some room. Finally, though, after not being able to get to this reef for quite a few months, we found the clam empty. In happier times, it looked like this.
