Gutturnium muricinum (Röding, 1798)
Muricinum triton,
39mm
Gutturnium muricinum
is common in the Marshalls.
It seems most abundant on lagoon reefs and pinnacles, and is often found in
the growth on floating docks and buoy lines, where it appears to prey upon small
bivalve mollusks. Some buoy lines that mark lagoon shipwrecks are continually
being jerked back and forth; it seems amazing these shells are able to hold
on through all this motion. Specimens have been seen all the way from the intertidal
down to at least 40m.
35.2mm. An especially dark colored
specimen.
