This species is rarely seen, but that is most likely due to its deeper habitat and secretive behavior. We have seen a few individuals on the seaward slope in areas where the dropoff becomes vertical, usually at 60m or more. They peek out of holes and small caves in the slope and are not easy to photograph. Allen et al (1998) report them from "steep outer reef slopes, from 25 to at least 75m depth."
