Rhabdamia gracilis (Bleeker, 1856)
Luminous cardinalfish, 142mm

These mostly transparent cardinalfish are abundant, particularly around lagoon reefs where they form large schools often mixed with Pristiapogon luteus and other cardinal species. They are reported to differ from a very similar species, R. novaluna, in that they lack a dark spot on the lower fin base, a character of R. novaluna. Some of the photos below show specimens with varying degrees of a dark spot in that position, suggesting that it may just be a variable characteristic of asingle species.
