This page links to photos of brachiopods (phylum Brachiopoda) that we have photographed in the Marshall Islands. The brachiopods are a rather ancient group of animals with many species known only from fossils. They usually have bivalved shells like small clams and feed with a double basket of filaments called a lophophore that is visible when the "clam" shells open up. We have seen two species in the Marshalls, although there are likely more. Indeed, Grant (1987) lists four species of brachiopods reported from Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands.
