Chromis atripectoralis are similar to the abundant Chromis viridis, differing in larger adult size and a black spot on the axil at the base of the pectoral fin, sort of the fish's "armpit." The black spot appears to be visible only when the pectoral fin is extended out away from the body. The first set of photos was taken by Christina Sylvester in a reef quarry at Omelek Island, Kwajalein Atoll.
The ID of these fish is uncertain. They were large enough for Chromis atripectoralis, but we did not see the black axil spot and the tail fin tips seem less elongate.
