Oxymonacanthus longirostris (Bloch & Schneider, 1801)
Longnose or orange spotted filefish, 12cm

This is the most abundant of the filefish here at Kwaj. Pairs or occasionally larger groups can often be seen, nose down, oscillating over colonies of living coral as they drop in to pick out the polyps. When several pairs combine into groups, they seem to spend as much or more time swirling around or chasing each other. They can be found on shallow lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reefs throughout the atoll. Inexperienced aquarists often try to maintain these attractive and easy to catch beauties in a home aquarium, but being strictly live coral feeders, the files do not do well.
