Salps are another jelly-like animal moving through the water that are often mistaken for kinds of jellyfish. These are animals related to the usually benthic sea squirts or tunicates. Often colonial, each segment of the long string of oval structures below is a separate animal. Salp strings are often fragile and break apart easily, but each segment is capable of growing on its own.
The strings of segments seem to be produced by a "head," a single barrel shaped salp often with an anterior soft spike.
Salp strands can pass through in large numbers.
