Synodus variegatus (Lacepède, 1803)
Reef or Variegated lizardfish, 40cm

This species is sometimes difficult to distinguish from Synodus binotatus, and it is possible some of our IDs may be in error. There is some color variability as seen in the photos below. This is generally the most common Kwajalein lizardfish, found on a wide range of lagoon, pinnacle and seaward reefs.

Some of these below could be Synodus binotatus.

An extremely red form.
