Phoxocampus tetrophthalmus (Bleeker, 1858)
Trunk-barred pipefish, 8cm

Phoxocampus tetrophthalmus seems to prefer living under rocks and in piles of rubble in channels on the seaward reef. This is species that is hard to place from the books. Our animals look very much like both Phoxocampus diacanthus in Randall (2005) and Phoxocampus tetrophthalmus in Kuiter (2009). There is a chance it is a black form of the former, but for now we are placing it under the latter.
