It was suggested on iNaturalist that this might be a variety of Neopetrosia carbonaria, but it sounds as though the ID is tentative. At Kwajalein it grows in small, irregularly shaped colonies exposed on rocks or coral, usually on seaward reefs. It is possible it is a different growth form of our black sponge sp. 1.
