Felimare californiensis (Bergh, 1879 )
25mm

Numerous specimens of this species were found in shallow water off Punta Chivato, Baja California, on 9 and 10 July 1983. This was the only place we saw it. The animal is so dark blue that in the photos it looks black. Formerly known as F. ghiselini, recent DNA work has found it to be the same species as Felimare californiensis, although those we saw looked quite a bit different than those we have seen in California. In particular, those in the Sea of Cortez were smaller, much darker in background color, and had more numerous yellow spots than specimens of F. californiensis we have seen around the Channel Islands, California.
