Another common name for boobies is gannets, which Darwin referred to in the Voyage of the Beagle: "The gannets, sitting on their rude nests, gaze at one with a stupid yet angry air." What an insult! I thought these Masked Boobies were kind of cute. Right below, an adult sporting a band on its right leg keeps its white down-covered chick company. These were ground nesters, laying an egg on a rudimentary nest near Scaevola bushes.
