This is a common species in Hawaii in a variety of subtidal habitats. They can usually be spotted out in the open during day or night dives.

The large individual below, with its somewhat broken dorsal ridges, is similar to the one we are calling Phyllidia sp. h277, but I think it is closer to P. varicosa.
