Since clams are at least partially dependent (maybe completely) on their symbiotic zooxanthellae, they are also susceptible to being shaded by corals. A dead and broken chunk of table Acropora had fallen over the right side of this one, shading it. Lacking light, the symbiotic zooxanthellae died or was expelled, leaving the tissue mostly white. It looks as though the tissue at bottom near the right side was getting a little light as it is just a bit paler. We moved the broken coral.
