Antennarius pictus (Shaw & Nodder, 1794)
Painted frogfish, 30cm

Antennarius pictus is uncommon to rare at Kwajalein, but is still one of the frogfish species most frequently encountered. It comes in a number of distinct color forms, including green, red, white and orange, all shown on separate pages. Although we do not have a clear view of the esca on these specimens and cannot be sure they are not Antennarius commerson, the spotting on the body suggests A. pictus. The one in the first two photos below measured about 25mm and was hidden among Halimeda plants in a lagoon algae patch.

This small 7mm long specimen appears to be the same species.
